Minnesota Cannabis
Program FAQ

Common questions about certification, enrollment, and patient rights. Source: mn.gov/ocm/dmc

You must first be certified by a participating health care practitioner like Assured Health. Once certified, the OCM emails you a link to complete enrollment in the Medical Cannabis Registry. After approval (up to 30 days), you can visit any licensed MN dispensary.
Certifications are valid for 90 days. You must submit a complete enrollment application and have it approved within this window. If approved, your enrollment lasts three years.
You must be recertified first. Book our Recertification appointment ($150). After recertification, the OCM sends a new enrollment email. You can re-enroll as early as 90 days before expiration. OCM processing takes up to 30 days.
No. The OCM does not issue physical cannabis cards. Log in to your Registry account and print a Registry Verification Document as proof of enrollment.
The OCM will email you instructions to complete a patient self-evaluation and contact a licensed dispensary. An initial consultation with the dispensary pharmacist is required before your first purchase.
Yes. A consultation with a licensed pharmacist or certified medical cannabis consultant at the dispensary is required before your first purchase to determine appropriate products, dosages, and methods.
No. Federal law prohibits crossing state lines with cannabis. Minnesota's program protections do not extend beyond the state's borders. Always keep cannabis in its original labeled packaging within Minnesota.
Under federal law, cannabis remains Schedule I. The ATF has stated that medical cannabis patients are prohibited from purchasing firearms under federal law. Consult an attorney for your specific situation.
No. CDL drivers are subject to federal DOT drug testing. The DOT states that state medical cannabis program enrollment is not a valid explanation for a positive drug test. Federal law prohibits use for CDL-covered individuals.
Minnesota law allows up to 8 cannabis plants (no more than 4 mature/flowering) per residence without a license, for adults 21+. Cultivation must occur at a primary residence in an enclosed locked space not visible to the public.
No. You must purchase only from a Minnesota-licensed medical cannabis dispensary. Products must be labeled with your name. Out-of-state purchases are not permitted under MN law.
